Truck parking spaces by state

The first three figures are from the FHWA's Jason's Law survey (2014 data): every truck space it counted, public and private. The last two are from ATRI and AASHTO (2024 data): truck spaces at public rest areas only. A state name links to its Park Graph parking page when there is one.

Methodology

Two official sources publish truck parking counts state by state, and this report uses both, unchanged. The FHWA's Jason's Law Truck Parking Survey counted public spaces (rest areas, welcome centers, turnouts) and private spaces (truck stops and travel plazas) in each state, with 2014 data, and related them to daily truck miles and to miles of the National Highway System. Alaska and Hawaii have no figures in that table.

ATRI and AASHTO's state findings count truck spaces at public rest areas only, with 2024 data, per 1 million truck miles and per 100 miles of the National Highway System. Alabama, Delaware and Rhode Island are not in that table. Because the two sources measure different things, compare states within one source, not across them.

Park Graph read both tables on Nov 5, 2026 and copied each figure as published. Nothing is estimated or filled in. The FHWA's third Jason's Law survey closed on February 27, 2026 and had published no results as of Nov 5, 2026.

Truck parking by state FAQ

Which state has the most truck parking?
Texas had the most truck parking in the FHWA's 2014 Jason's Law survey, 27,380 of the 308,920 spaces counted nationwide. In ATRI and AASHTO's 2024 data, Florida has the most public rest-area truck spaces.
Why are the FHWA and ATRI numbers so different?
They count different things. The FHWA's Jason's Law survey counted every public and private truck space it found, including truck stops, in 2014. ATRI and AASHTO's 2024 state findings count only the truck spaces at public rest areas. Compare states within one source, not across the two.
Is there newer truck parking data than 2014?
For public rest areas, yes: ATRI and AASHTO's state findings use 2024 data. For all truck spaces, public and private, the FHWA's 2014 Jason's Law survey is the latest state table. The FHWA's third survey closed in February 2026 and had published no results as of Nov 5, 2026.
Can I park a semi truck overnight at a rest area?
Rules differ by state and by rest area, so check the signs where you stop. This report counts how many rest-area truck spaces each state has, not the parking rules at each one.
Can I use this truck parking data in my own work?
Yes. The data is free under CC BY 4.0, including commercial use, as long as you credit Park Graph and link to the dataset page. The CSV and JSON files are on this page and the Cite as line is ready to copy.
